My Opinion Of SCOTUS Has Forever Changed

In the Summer of 1987, I began my pursuit of an Associate of Paralegal Studies. I must admit, I left the program before completing the degree, but my love for the Law and our Constitution is firmly in place to this day. In the Spring of 1989, I accompanied my husband, (the reason I left the program) to Washington, D. C. for a family wedding. We did a little sightseeing while we were there. It was a much different atmosphere than it is today. There were no fences around buildings. You could stand in front of the White House and take a photo. You could also walk right up to the door of the Supreme Court. That was one of the things I wanted to do the most. I wanted to walk up those stairs, place my hands on the ornate, larger than life, wooden doors. I wanted to drink up the energy and electricity that is the heart of our nation. That is exactly what I did. This was when my now ex-husband took this photo. I have always looked at this remembrance of a wonderful day with pride. Today I look at this picture and I do not feel the happiness it brought me on previous occasions, I feel sadness.
Today, the Supreme Court rendered its most monumental ruling in years. For posterity, the date is June 24, 2022. They chose this date to roll back the history of women’s reproductive rights half a century. They reversed Roe v. Wade in their decision on Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, 19–1392. The vote was 6–3. As I type the words, I still cannot believe it has happened. In my opinion, this was a bad decision. I never wanted to question the ruling or authority of the Supreme Court. I have respected their rulings and opinions. I cannot agree with this one. It is a bridge to far for me. This essentially gives States the right to decide how to handle this most private and fundamental issue for women; how to handle issues of their own reproductive rights.
I am long past the age of childbearing. This case does not directly impact my personal freedoms. It does, however, impact my existence as a woman. I have longed believed that women should stand up for other women. If you have ever experienced the unfortunate history of rape in America, you tend to stand up for the rights of all women.
